Get to know more about Breast Cancer: Women's Health, Breast Cancer CANSA
Breast cancer is the growth of abnormal cells in breast tissue. If the cancer spreads (metastasis) it can lower your chance of survival
If you experience any symptoms, seek medical care at your nearest clinic or hospital. Receiving treatment before the cancer can spread increases chances of survival.
Prior to the month of October, a team of healthcare workers lead by Dr Oreeditse Sedumedi in the Tunisi Program made a research wanting to understand the core challenges regarding breast cancer. Late presentation remains one of the biggest challenges (esp in disadvantaged communities) in the management of breast cancer patients, with negative implications on overall morbidity and mortality. We as the Tunisi Program in partnership with a variety of companies intend to raise awareness in Northwest area, not limited thereof, as we will use digital reach for the month of October as its breast cancer month in the country.
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in the South African female population and accounts for most cancer related deaths in females. Early detection, especially through robust screening programmes can drastically change the above reality.
Self examination of your breasts. Lumps, change in skin texture, discharge, change in size can be signs of breast cancer.
Frequent mammograms. If close family members have had breast cancer, it puts you at a higher risk of developing breast cancer. Mammograms can help detect cancer early.
Older women have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. Increase mammograms if you’re older than 55 years of age.
Lead a healthy lifestyle. Eat healthy foods and exercise regularly. Reduce consumption of alcohol.
Men can get breast cancer. If mutations are found in high risk genes (BRCA1, BRCA2) it increases chances of developing breast cancer in men and women.
